Gangtey Tshechu Festival, held at Gangtey Goemba from 24–26 September 2026, is one of the biggest annual festivals of Bhutan. The Tshechu honours Guru Rinpoche with many different performances – a brilliant time to experience Bhutanese culture.

Besides the Tshechu, you will explore Thimphu's landmarks, the scenic Gangtey valley, and striking sites in Punakha and Paro.

Gangtey Tshechu Festival, held at Gangtey Goemba from 24–26 September 2026, is one of the biggest annual festivals of Bhutan. The Tshechu honours Guru Rinpoche with many different performances – a brilliant time to experience Bhutanese culture.

Besides the Tshechu, you will explore Thimphu's landmarks, the scenic Gangtey valley, and striking sites in Punakha and Paro.

Day 01
Arrive in Paro and travel to Thimphu
Paro → Thimphu · 55km · ~1.5hrs · 2,400m

Welcome to Bhutan! Drive to Thimphu. Stop at Tachogang Lhakhang (Temple of The Excellent Horse) by Thangtong Gyalpo (1385–1464).

Visit National Memorial Chorten, dedicated to world peace and the Late King.

Buddha Point (51.5m) with 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside.

Tashichho Dzong (1216 A.D) on Wang Chhu River. Flag changing ceremony at 5pm. Explore Norzin Lam. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 02
Thimphu to Gangtey
Thimphu → Gangtey · 160km · ~6hrs · 2,900m

Drive to Gangtey valley. Stop at Dochula Pass (3,050m) – panoramic views of eastern Himalayan ranges with 108 chortens.

Follow the Gangtey Nature Trail from the hilltop overlooking Gangtey Goemba, through flower pastures, Semchubara village, and blue pine forest to Khewang Lhakhang. Overnight in Gangtey.

Day 03
★ Gangtey Tshechu Festival
Gangtey Goemba · Festival Days · 2,900m

★ FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHT — Three-day celebration at Gangtey Goemba (1613), overlooking Phobjikha valley. Sacred masked dances, folk songs, and community gatherings.

Day One (Pema Lingpa): Atsara (Dance of Clowns), Sa Cha Cham (Ground Breaking), Jug/Dri/Nga Ging Cham (Stick/Sword/Drum Dances), Pa Cham (Dance of Heroes), Tsholing Cham (Sacred War Dance), Ging Chen Cham.

Day Two (Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal): Zhana Cham (Black Hat Dance), Sha Cham (Stag Dance), Dur Dag Cham (Lords of Cremation Ground), Raksha Mang Cham (Judgment Day Dance), Tung Ngam Cham (Terrifying Deities).

Day Three (Guru Rinpoche): Guru Tshengyed Cham (Eight Manifestations), Thongdrel display, Drametse Nga Cham (Drum Dance of Drametse). The sacred Thongdrel is displayed before sunrise and believed to cleanse sins. Overnight in Gangtey.

Day 04
Gangtey to Punakha
Gangtey → Punakha · 87km · ~3hrs · 1,300m

Morning: continue joining Gangtey Tshechu with more performances. The atmosphere is always vibrant and filled with happiness.

After lunch, drive to Punakha – the old capital, a city of history that has witnessed the most important moments of Bhutan's history. Overnight in Punakha.

Day 05
Punakha sightseeing
Punakha · Full day · 1,300m

Visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, sitting on a cliff overlooking valleys of Punakha and Wangduephodrang.

Punakha Dzong (Palace of Great Happiness, 1637), the second dzong in Bhutan, former seat of government. Site of the King's wedding.

Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge (160m) with colourful prayer flags and views of Punakha Dzong.

Hike (~1hr) to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten (1,500m) through rice fields and pine trees. Best view of Punakha valley. Overnight in Punakha.

Day 06
Punakha to Paro
Punakha → Paro · 125km · ~4hrs · 2,300m

Walk to Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), 25 minutes through green hillock fields and Lobesa Village.

Visit Paro Rinpung Dzong (1644) – towering white walls visible from anywhere in town.

National Museum (Ta Dzong) – collections of thangkas, festival masks, weapons, textiles. Overnight in Paro.

Day 07
Tiger's Nest & Farewell Dinner
Paro · Full day · 3,120m peak

Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest), 4.5km trail, 900m elevation gain. Every Bhutanese must complete this pilgrimage once.

Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of 108 temples by King Songtsen Gampo (7th century). Pilgrims spinning prayer wheels.

Special dinner with a local family in a traditional farmhouse. Last night in Paro.

Day 08
Depart Paro
