By day, Bhutan is all mountain passes, ancient monasteries, and forests that seem to stretch to the edge of the world. But when the sun drops behind the Himalayas and the stars come out over the Thimphu valley, a different side of the kingdom reveals itself — one that surprises almost every visitor. Bhutan has a nightlife scene, and it is unexpectedly vibrant.

After a day of trekking or sightseeing, there is no better way to unwind than with good food, live music, and cocktails crafted from local ingredients. Here is our guide to the best clubs and bars in Thimphu — and one in Paro — where you can experience Bhutan after dark.

Space 34

A Thimphu institution for over a decade, Space 34 sits in the heart of the capital on Changlam and is the favourite haunt of nighttime revellers across all age groups. The venue is divided into three distinct spaces: The Divine Madman’s Corner (a live music bar named, naturally, after Bhutan’s most irreverent saint), Ice & Smokes (a smoking bar area), and Illuminati (the dance floor). Local DJs spin pop, EDM, Korean hits, and Bhutanese tracks, while the lounge offers a cosy spot to sit back, socialise, and take in the scene.

Free entry for ladies on Wednesdays. Open until midnight on Wednesdays, until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Entry fee: Nu. 350 per person (up to Nu. 500 for special events). Venue: Changlam, main Thimphu town.

Viva City

If dancing under neon lights to reggae, rap, rock, and hip-hop sounds like your kind of evening, Viva City is where Thimphu’s young rebels, rockers, and ravers converge. Located just above the city bus and taxi parking area, the club has both an indoor dance floor and an open-air lounge area that looks stunning under bright, colourful lights. Local bands and artists perform regularly, and the food is as good as the music.

Open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Ladies enter free on Wednesdays. Entry: Nu. 350. Venue: Sheten Lam.

Mojo Park

Mojo Park is the live music heart of Thimphu — a venue that has been the city’s favourite since opening in 2011 on Chang Lam Road. Music runs from around 7 PM well into the night, with local and visiting bands covering every genre. The laidback setting draws locals and expatriates alike, and the menu features both American and Bhutanese cuisine alongside local creations — try the Bhutanese beers Druk 11000 or Druk Lager, or local whiskeys K5 and Misty Peak.

The weekly programme is a music lover’s dream: Monday Night Blues Jam, Wednesday Acoustic Acts, Thursday Solo Acts, Weekend Band Acts (Friday and Saturday), and Sunday Low Profile Originals. Guests can even jam with the local band. Paintings of popular musicians and personalities are sold on-site. Venue: Yangchenma Building, Changlam, Thimphu.

Jimmy’s Pub

A striking blend of classic interior and modern pub culture, Jimmy’s Pub delivers live music in a setting that impresses with its balance of natural colours, powerful sound system, and serene garden with a smoking zone. Inside, interesting antiques are on display alongside a unique multi-bar setup with special offerings. The vibe is sophisticated yet welcoming — a place where conversations flow as easily as the drinks. Venue: Gongdzin Lam, Thimphu.

Club Ace — Paro

For a scene with fewer tourists and more local energy, Club Ace in Paro delivers. Pumped with electronic music and passionate young crowds, the club’s mirror dance floor lights up with dancers showing off their moves to a soundtrack that keeps the energy high all night. It is one of the best places to meet young locals, share a conversation, and experience a side of Bhutan that most guidebooks never mention. Venue: Phendey Lam, Paro.

Bhutanese nightlife will never compete with Bangkok or Tokyo — and that is precisely its charm. In a country where monks chant at dawn and prayer flags catch the morning breeze, finding a live music bar where the bass thumps and the crowd sings along feels like discovering a secret. The Bhutanese work hard, pray deeply, and — when the night comes — they know exactly how to celebrate.
