The Palden Lhamo Drupchen, or Festival of Mahakali, emerges from a tapestry of mystical visions and ancient protective traditions spanning centuries. Yeshey Goenpoi Drubchen / Festival of Mahakala

Date14 November to 16 November 2026 and 04 December to 06 December 2027

LocationTrongsa Dzong, Central Bhutan

The Yeshey Goenpoi Drubchen, or the Festival of Mahakala, is a captivating three-day annual ritual that takes place in the historic Trongsa Dzong from the 6th to the 8th day of the 10th month in the Bhutanese calendar. This sacred event, centered around the deity Gonpo (Mahakala in Sanskrit), is a powerful invocation for peace and protection for all sentient beings and the entire nation of Bhutan.

Steeped in tradition dating back to the 17th century, the festival’s origins can be traced to the revered Zhabdrung Ngwang Namgyel, who established the first Drupchen (great prayer) at Cheri Monastery in Thimphu. Initially performed only in Punakha Dzong, the ritual was later expanded to three additional locations, including Trongsa Dzong, by the 68th Je Khenpo Tenzin Dendup and the 4th King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in the 1980s.

The Festival Rituals

The festival’s preparations are a sight to behold, as the head of the Trongsa monastic body and other monks engage in seven days and nights of rituals focused on the deity Gonpo. Once the three-day Drupchen commences, the air resonates with the rhythmic chants and intricate dances performed by the monks from the dratshang (state monastic school).

Each day of the festival features a unique set of dances, culminating in a powerful finale on the third day. The climax of the festival unfolds on the third day, when a ceremonial procession takes place, carrying the ritual cakes to the Bjizam Bridge near Trongsa. In a symbolic act of purification and blessing, the head of the monastic body recites ancient prayers and ceremoniously casts the ritual cakes into the flowing waters of the Mangde River, a moment that encapsulates the festival’s profound spiritual essence.

Cultural Significance

While the Yeshey Goenpoi Drubchen is undoubtedly a profound spiritual experience, it is also a visual masterpiece that unveils the intricate layers of Bhutan’s cultural heritage.
