Wangdue Phodrang Tshechu Festival
Date19 September to 21 September 2026 and 8 October to 10 October 2027
LocationWangdue Phodrang Dzong, Central Bhutan
The Wangdue Phodrang Tshechu Festival is a magnificent three-day celebration held annually during the autumn season. This sacred festival takes place at the spectacular Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, perched dramatically on a ridge overlooking the confluence of two sacred rivers.
Built in 1638, the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong serves as both the administrative center and the spiritual heart of the district. The dzong’s main courtyard transforms into a divine theater where centuries-old Buddhist traditions come alive through elaborate mask dances and ritual performances.
Raksha Mangcham – The Crown Jewel
The festival’s crown jewel is the Raksha Mangcham - the Dance of the Ox, also known as the Dance of the Judgement of the Dead. This spectacular performance, introduced by the revered treasure revealer Tertoen Karma Lingpa, is based on the Bardo Thoedrol (Book of the Dead). The dance depicts the soul’s journey through the intermediate state between death and rebirth, where Buddha appears in peaceful and wrathful forms to guide souls toward liberation.
The Theatrical Court of Justice
The performance unfolds as a theatrical court of justice, with each masked dancer representing manifestations of Buddha:
- Raksha Lango (Ox-headed dancer) - Minister of Justice, following karmic principles
- Phag Gochen (Wild hog-headed) - Keeper of records of all deeds
- Chung Gochen (Garuda-headed) - Destroyer of evil and ignorance
- Singye Gochen (Lion-headed) - Bearer of love’s bonds and mercy
- Domgyi Gochen (Bear-headed) - Eliminator of selfishness, cultivator of wisdom
- Drulgyi Gochen (Snake-headed) - Holder of fate’s mirror reflecting all deeds
- Trelgyi Gochen (Monkey-headed) - Weigher of sins against virtues
The festival concludes with the unfurling of the sacred Guru Tshengye Thongdrel, believed to bestow liberation upon all who view it. This extraordinary celebration offers profound insights into Bhutan’s living spiritual heritage against the backdrop of one of the kingdom’s most beautiful dzongs.
